DHP Opti range – technology to maximise efficiency

Danfoss is taking a new step forward in the development of the heating systems of the future. New Opti technology ensures that a heat pump always works at optimum efficiency, in all weather conditions, which means maximum savings and minimum environmental impact. Opti operation is included in the new Opti range, along with several other exciting new features.

While launching a top-of-the-line range, Danfoss is taking the opportunity to include the most up-to-date and effective technology.
In addition to Opti technology, DHP-H Opti Pro, the premier product in the new range, offers improved hot water production. Thanks to new HGW technology* the heat pump can produce hot water in a highly cost-effective way while heating the home. This means extra amounts of hot water at low cost during the colder part of the year.

“We have used the most recent innovations available in our new Opti range. The result is a fantastic range of products that we are very proud of and feel very excited about launching on the European market. We also have a very positive view of opportunities presented by the new RES directive adopted by the European parliament. This directive means that heat pumps are classified as a renewable source of energy. Combined with the fact that Europe must increase the share of energy produced by renewable sources up to 2020 this opens up major opportunities for the future,” says Lars Bergen, Marketing Director for Danfoss Heat Pumps.

The new products in the Opti range have been produced by the Danfoss research and development centre in Sweden, and cover four models; two that extract energy from groundrock, soil, lake or ground water (DHP-H Opti Pro and DHP-L Opti), and two that extract energy from outdoor air (DHP-A Opti and DHP-AL Opti). They are available in five power outputs (6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 kW) and are being launched all over Europe.

*HGW (Hot Gas Water heater) is a patented method for producing hot water. This provides higher annual efficiency combined with unbeatable hot water comfort.

DHP-AX – a flexible heat pump with a maximum of efficiency

To meet growing demand on the European market, Danfoss Heat Pumps is launching a new type of air/water heat pump. DHP-AX can be connected to existing heating systems or be expanded to provide a complete heating solution. In other words it is a flexible heat pump that can provide both heating and hot water, and the customer gains a maximum of efficiency at a minimum of cost.

DHP-AX comprises a base unit that includes heat pump functionality. The base unit can be combined with a specially adapted indoor kit creating a complete heating solution that provides both heating and hot water. It can also be connected with an existing heating system or parts of such a system, such as a hot water boiler.

“We have developed this product to meet increased demand on the European market for small, silent and effective air/water heat pumps. DHP-AX is full of technical innovations and we strongly believe it will meet the requirements of a target audience looking for an affordable and reliable heating solution. The flexibility of the heat pump combined with a favourable price and high performance, means the end-user gets value for money,” says Lars Bergen, Marketing Director at Danfoss Heat Pumps.

The product has been developed at Danfoss research and development centre in Sweden. DHP-AX is available in four power outputs (6, 8, 10 and 12 kW) and is being launched all over Europe.

“We see very exciting possibilities for this product. Not least considering the new RES directive adopted by the European parliament, which classifies heat pumps as a renewable source of energy. Danfoss Heating has launched a brand new feature to ensure that our web sites can be seen and used on mobile phones.

We challenge you to try it!

When you visit www.heating.danfoss.com using a mobile phone you will get a mobile view optimised for the smaller screen size.

Mobile view is optimised for QVGA (240x320) screen resolution. For some phones with higher resolution it may be necessary to enable mobile internet in the phone settings.

Focus has been on simplicity; consequently the content and the layout have some limitations compared to the normal PC view. This makes it easier to navigate using a mobile phone.

On the front page you can search directly on the product you need information about.

Use the same web address as before. The site will automatically adapt to the mobile view.

This new feature works with almost any recent mobile phone with internet access.

Are you ready to turn on the heat?

Winter is approaching, the weather is getting colder and it’s time to turn on the heat.

But are your radiators ready?

This is what you can do to ensure that your old radiators functions and performs optimally:

- Turn your radiators ALL the way up. When you do this your radiators should become warm ALL over.

If they do you’re ready for winter, but if they only get partially warm, you need to take action.

And one action could be to bleed your radiators – let air out of them. It sounds dramatic, but in fact it’s a simple and straight forward operation.

- Turn down the heat and turn the bleed screw at the top end of your radiator.

Have some kitchen towels or a cloth to catch any drips. You should hear hissing which indicates that air is being forced out by the water.

As soon as water squirts through the bleed screw, re-tighten it and make sure it is not leaking before moving on to the next radiator!

If you radiator still doesn’t heat properly, you might have a blocked radiator valve, It can happen after long periods without use, e.g. from spring to autumn, material from the water can deposit on the valve pin causing it to stick.

In order to solve the problem the sensor must be removed from the valve.

When the sensor has been removed from the valve, you gently push down the pin protruding from the valve (never pull!).
The pin should be able to move 2-3 mm in and then bounce out again - otherwise it is stuck.

In order to loosen a stuck pin you can try changing between gently beating the valve on the side and pushing down the pin until the pin again moves freely.

When it is again moving freely, you can re-attach the sensor. But before you do, make sure that there’s no leakage or dripping from the stuffing box.

If the above procedure is not successful, you should contact the heating technician.

Rules of thumb
When using radiators there are a few good rules of thumb to remember:

- It’s always a good idea to use all radiators in a room. You save nothing by having one on full throttle and the others closed. In fact a fully heated radiator will use more heat than 2 or 3 that are turned only ¼ up. This is especially true when you use district heating.

- When ventilating a room: Turn down your thermostat – leave windows open for 5-6 minutes – create draft – walls and furniture will remain warm. If you don’t turn down your thermostat – it will react to the draft and cold by turning up the heat automatically.

- Always maintain a minimum of 16 degrees in all rooms. Never go below 14 degrees as this might damage the building and cause damp, condensation and mould.

- You can save money and energy by turning down your radiators at night. But if you turn them down more than 3 degrees all the money saved will be used on reheating the room again.

If you find it difficult to achieve the right and constant temperature in your house – one of the reasons might be the placement of your thermostats. If they are hidden behind a curtain or in direct sunlight it will be difficult for the thermostat to register the exact room temperature.

A solution would be to install a Danfoss remote sensor. If you choose a remote sensor that fits your old valve you don’t even have to drain the radiator before you attach it.

The transition from the respected and well know CENCER mark will be complete by January 1st 2012 and all existing CENCER licences will be converted to KEYMARK licences.

The Danish ’Golden-4’ win gold at the Beijing Olympics

Since 2002 Danfoss has been the proud sponsor of the Danish Lightweight Men’s Four.

And yesterday the four rowers won the most prestigious of all races – the A-final at the Olympic Games.

In a boat named ‘Bitten Clausen’ they out-rowed all others. True to their tactics through out the games they began the race in an astonishing pace and never let go of the front.

The Golden-4 completed the 2000 metres in 5:47.76 almost two seconds faster than number two – the boat from Poland.

The nick name ‘The Golden-4’ has clung to the boat and crew since the first world record in 1994 and since then it medal tally includes gold at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, bronze in Sydney in 2000, gold in Athens 2004 and now gold in Beijing.

The Beijing Olympics begin on the 8th of August, but the preparation has been going on for years.
That includes the building of the so far only fourth 7-star hotel in the world – ‘The Beijing 7-stars Morgan Plaza’.

Construction of Morgan Plaza began in 2002 and will be finished just in time for the Beijing Olympics.

And it looks as though the engineers and architects have sought inspiration and rewritten the Olympic mantra ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’ to something like ‘Extravagant, Luxuriant, Superabundant’.

The hotel is situated in the bustling district of Changan in the northern part of Beijing - the area where the most expensive real estate in the whole of the city is found. Danfoss sells Convec comfort panels to Meinertz A/S

The radiator manufacturer Meinertz takes over the development, production, and sales of Danfoss’ designer comfort panels.

As of May 1, Meinertz A/S, located in Skanderborg, Denmark, will take over all of the development, sales, and production activities related to Convec comfort panels from Danfoss A/S, which has been involved in the development of the unique comfort panels since 2003.

The Convec product family is characterised by the comfort it provides for users and by a unique design solution, which unites flexibility and modern aesthetics. Danfoss has developed the Convec business from a venture stage, and has achieved high references from a large number of very interesting building projects in Denmark as well as abroad.

”We reached a point with Convec when we had to decide whether we were the best owners of the business we had created. The answer was that we could not give the business the focus it required. Therefore, we approached Meinertz, which already has focus on this type of business, ” says Nis Storgaard, President of the Danfoss Heating Division.

At Meinertz, Managing Director Peter Neldorf Petersen does not conceal the fact that their response to the approach was enthusiastic.

”The Convec name is respected and Danfoss is providing us with a product, which, in record time, has moved from the idea stage to a thoroughly tested and very reliable solution. As a producer with 40 years’ experience in manufacturing convector and radiator solutions with focus on design, we know the requirements and expectations of the target group, and we are geared to meet them. We are therefore pleased about this substantial expansion of our product range,” says Peter Neldorf Petersen.

For the time being, the production of the Convec products will continue at Danfoss’ factory in Silkeborg, Denmark but, during this year, it will be relocated to the Meinertz factory in Skanderborg, where the first stage of a major factory expansion was recently completed. At that time the employees in the existing production unit as well as selected key staff from the Convec business, will be moving to Skanderborg. All of the remaining Convec employees will be offered continued employment at Danfoss.

According to the agreement with Meinertz, Danfoss will keep the current service and guarantee obligations, which relate to products that have already been sold.

Danfoss lends its name to a recently discovered lemur species

Researchers from the veterinary college Tierärztliche Hochschule in Hannover (TiHo), Germany, have discovered a previously unknown lemur species in Madagascar. Now this newly identified species has been given the scientific name "Microcebus danfossi" – after Danfoss - and Danfoss is contributing to further research in the field, as well as to the maintenance of the natural environment of these extremely endangered animals.

The small lemur is a prosimian, which lives only on Madagascar. It is a nocturnal animal that communicates via ultrasound and feeds primarily on fruits and insects. Its most remarkable feature is its ability to lower its metabolic rate during the day in the dry, cold season, from June until September. In a sleep-like state (torpor), its body temperature is reduced by almost half and the energy it needs is cut by 25 to 40 per cent.

The veterinary college in Hannover (TiHo), Germany, contacted Danfoss because the company’s German-based Heating division had used lemurs in a marketing campaign: the highly efficient, energy-saving features of Danfoss heating components had been compared to the internal heating ’controls’ of a lemur. In cooperation with BIOPAT, Danfoss is now supporting the lemur species, which was discovered by Gillian Olivieri, from TiHo’s Zoology Institute.

This particular species is the size of a hamster: it weighs between 30 and 60 grams and has been given the scientific name Microcebus danfossi. Danfoss is helping support work to protect the lemur in Madagascar and the continuing research within the field.

The energy source of the future is here

House owners more than halve their energy costs and save the environment.

The heat pump conquers Europe. The Danish Danfoss group supplements its range and now also offers heat pumps. These provide heating and hot water as well as cost effective cooling when it is necessary. Danfoss heat pumps have been developed in Scandinavia over the last few decades and can give savings of more than 50 percent of energy costs. An average house owner could make savings of up to 2 500 EUR a year. That heat pumps also help to save the environment from the greenhouse effect is another reason that heat pumps are being installed in more and more homes.

Heat pumps retrieve energy that heats, and, if required, provides cost effective summer cooling for houses, offices and multi-occupation buildings. The energy is retrieved from the solar energy that is stored in rock, the ground or the air. There are technical solutions for every requirement.
“The heat pump is here to stay and we see a great demand for it in Southern and Central Europe. This revolutionary invention has been under development for more than 30 years and has the required characteristics. Now property owners here can have access to this economic, environmentally friendly energy source, which uses the sun’s heat recovered from the rock, ground or even air. The growth here in Europe is expected to be at least 30 percent during 2007”, says Carsten L Sørensen, SVP of Danfoss Heat Pumps.

Solar heat from rock, ground or air
A heat pump does not take up much space, require any maintenance or need to be refilled with fuel. It is an energy source that is reliable, easy to care for and has a service life of at least 10 -15 years.
There are three alternatives for the heat pump to retrieve energy from: the rock, the ground or the air.

Hygienic radiator sensor

The RAX radiator thermostat of the stylish Danfoss X-tra Collection™ has been recognized as being particularly suitable for use in hospitals, nursing homes, the food industry - and other places where hygiene is especially important.

It is Hygiene-Institut Nord in Greifswald, Germany, that has tested the radiator valve.

The disinfection of the valve in the ‘White’ and ‘Chrome’ versions led to an almost 100 percent reduction of organisms.

This is due to the smooth, closed sensor head which makes it easy to disinfect it.
